Photographic Installation "Plumas"

Frutillar, Chile
2006

Feathers is a photographic installation, a sensory explosion that explores the concept of macro within micro. Close-up shots of native New Zealand bird's feathers are printed as a series of large-scale, abstract images that look textural, have a tactile quality, and exude a lush depth and breadth of colour.

In the centre of the space is a strip of images, forming the focal point and spine of the installation. Viewers are invited to walk across the spine in the centre of the gallery space, brushing past feathers suspended from the ceiling and experiencing the fragility of the installation. PratoCasanova's installation serves as a metaphor for the fragility of our environment. The exhibition asks the viewer to tread gently through the space, reflecting our interaction with the environment. Feathers holds up a mirror to our existence.

PratoCasanova's work acts as a metaphor for reality - the universe is contained in the small details of life.

Feathers evolved from Prato-Casanova's earlier installation, Wings.
Wings was a series of photographic portraits of Pacific people presented on transparent paper and superimposed on images of wings. Prato-Casanova says, "When I have an idea, I have wings. In the process of materialising that idea, I evolve...
" Feathers is a progression of Wings and an expression of her desire to evolve.
