Mapuche Vision: Ñuke Mapu - Mother Earth

"On Earth, there was nothing—no water, no flowers."

In the air lived a powerful Spirit and other lesser Powers.

Some of these rebelled, and the Mighty One turned them into stone and placed his foot upon them. As they broke apart, they formed the mountains.

The spirits that remained alive and showed remorse emerged from the rocks as flames and volcanic smoke.

The most repentant ones ascended into the sky and became the stars. Their tears of regret are the origin of the rain. The Mighty Spirit found the Earth sorrowful and transformed one of his own spirit-children into a man. As he fell, he lost consciousness. His mother, overcome with grief, opened a small window in the sky to look at him—the pale face that men call the Moon.

The Mighty Spirit took a star and, turning it into a woman, commanded her to go and accompany his son. She had to walk upon the Earth, which hurt her, but at her command, grass and flowers grew in her path. When she touched them, the flowers turned into birds and butterflies, and the grass became dense forests. The Mighty Spirit watched them from a window in the sky—what we know as the Sun. (1)
